Born on October 5th 1936 in Prague, he is an influential czech writer and dramatist, one of the main figures of Charter 77 Foundation, an anticommunist manifesto, and the last president of Czechoslovakia and the first of Czech republic.
He was born into very considerable entrepreneurial family. His grandfather co-founded the famous Lucerna Cinema, his uncle is the founder of Barrandov film studios. Out of political reasons, he was not allowed to continue in studies, in 1951. That is why he started studying the chemical technician in the half of the 1950s and also, at the same time, the evening grammar school.
Once again, out of political reasons, he was denied to study a humanitarian college, so he decided to study a technical college, which he left after two years.
After the two year obligatory national service he worked as a flyman in the ABC Theatre and Theatre Na zabradli, while he studied dramaturgy distantly on DAMU, a prestigious Czech theatre college. In 1964 his first play The Garden party was introduced and after eight-year relationship, he married his first wife Olga. He described her as his biggest pillar who has been through everything with him.
As a dissident he steadily acted against the political system, in 1975 he wrote an open letter to president Husák and the peak of this activity was the above mentioned Charter 77, for which he was sentenced to five years in prison. During The Velvet revolution he became its head leader, a month later he was elected the last Czechoslovakian, non-communist president. In 1993 he became the first president of Czech republic.
1996 – his wife Olga dies,
1997 – he marries his second wife, actress Dagmar Veskrnova,
2003 – his successor in presidency, Valclav Klaus, settles in the Prague castle,
2008 – a film called Citizen Havel is introduced in cinemas, gives us a look into Havel´s both personal and work life.
Havel became the icon of fight for freedom and was suggested for a Nobel Peace Prize several times.
